Cory and Tarra Davis

Daddy Pete's BBQ, LLC, Grand Rapids, MI

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce you to the “First Family” of BBQ: Cory, Tarra and Maya of Daddy Pete’s BBQ, LLC. Daddy Pete’s BBQ, LLC was born out of a passion for barbecue by Cory Davis in 2012, and the business model was given definition by his wife and co-owner, Tarra Davis shortly thereafter. Their daughter, Maya also helps with small details of the family business to ensure that it is successful.

The Backstory. It all started when Tarra bought Cory a grill for his birthday. Using that small grill, Cory cultivated a desire to prepare delicious, smoked meats, cooked low & slow, southern-style for his family. That desire sparked an even bigger interest when Cory entered and won a few local barbecue competitions. So many people were asking about and for his BBQ, that the couple began exploring the possibility of opening a barbecue business. They began to sell their delicious meats on occasion and Cory had to purchase an even larger, double-barrel grill to meet the demand. Daddy Pete’s BBQ, LLC had officially been birthed. Daddy Pete’s BBQ, LLC was named after Cory Davis’ father, Pete Davis, who was known throughout Grand Rapids, MI for his delicious BBQ.

The Process. While owning a barbecue business was always the desire, there was also a goal to operate the business without debt. In the beginning, this meant it would take the couple longer to open as a concession trailer, but opening without debt was a move that would set them up for long-term success. Slowly, but surely they worked hard, saved money, built the business and perfected a smoking process that allowed them to purchase a mobile food concession trailer.

Specialties. Daddy Pete’s BBQ, LLC offers a limited selection of traditional southern favorites with a unique slow-smoked flavor. While complimentary side dishes are available, the star of the show is the slow-smoked meat. A significant majority of Daddy Pete’s menu consists of locally sourced ingredients which are typically prepared fresh daily, in their onboard commercial kitchen and rotisserie smoker. Their menu features the following items which are cooked using the low (temp) & slow (time) method: ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken and smoked salmon.

Advice for Entrepreneurs. Do what you’re passionate about and focus on providing the best product/service to your customer-not the money. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. You may not be able to find a bank to fund your dream, but don’t let that deter you. Start small and work your way up to where you want to be. As you build your business continue to learn and hone your craft and connect with people who are like minded. Starting your own business is not easy. It can be stressful, and cost a lot in time and money. It can also cause sleepless nights. Some people may let you down. You will even be criticized. However, do it anyways, because the reward will be worth it in the end. Regardless of how successful it may or may not have been, at least you will be able to say that you tried.

We are so thankful for the opportunities that God has given us thus far, and are excited about what the future holds!
